People receiving the Ph.D. degree in the Department of Physiology have had a wide range of educational and research experiences in the basic sciences. With this background, some successfully seek professional-level employment directly in educational institutions and some enter postdoctoral programs. Others begin their professional careers in state and federal governmental research agencies, in corporate settings of pharmaceutical companies or in other private businesses.
Many Ph.D. graduate students in the department are also students in the on-campus College of Human Medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine, or College of Veterinary Medicine. Successful completion of both programs provides dual degree certification. This option is especially valuable for those who intend to teach and pursue research programs in areas of clinical medicine. Some Ph.D. graduates elect to continue professional training by entering medical training programs. Their combined degrees obtained in sequential programs provide similar opportunities to those who receive dual degrees by simultaneously enrolling in both programs.
