It is common for students to obtain advanced placement or waiver credits in specific areas in which they have had prior training. This status is evaluated either at the time of admission to the university, or by faculty examination in appropriate departments during the undergraduate years. It is important that each student's academic record carries this notation and that each faculty advisor has this information.

Obtaining advanced placement by whatever means relieves the student of having to enroll in and complete successfully comparable courses. The student does not, however, accumulate the academic credit for the advanced placement. Although there is no increase in earned credits toward graduation, there are other advantages. For example, it provides greater freedom to explore electives. It also allows the student to invest more time and effort to become involved in research opportunities.
